Sitting down with Andrew Patterson was truly inspirational and a heartfelt experience in sharing our stories with one another. I left feeling energized and so grateful to meet a soul just as passionate about evolutionary growth and transformation! Thank you Andrew for dropping in with me, for creating endless possibilities through our conversation, and your reflection of my journey in this article.

Andrew just published his book, “My Journey Beyond the Summit: A Story about the Transformative Power of Stepping into the Unknown”. I just reserved my copy and encourage you to as well! Sincerely one of the most inspiring individuals I’ve met. Excited to take in more of his journey and undoubtedly nuggets of wisdom he shares in this book.

If you are interested in reading this feature in The Laurel of Ashevillee, it can be found in the June 2025 issue on page 48. So much gratitude for the opportunity to share my story, love for creating, and journey in trusting the flow of life. ❤️

I am excited to share that I am one of 40 regional craft artists awarded the WNC Craft Futures Cohort grant or a Virginia A. Groot Craft Futures Residency from Center for Craft! To receive this grant and experience this six month cohort alongside so many extraordinary artists in our region is a true honor. Thank you to those who made this possible for me on my creative journey!

The Center tor Cratt is thrilled to announce the WNC Craft Futures Cohort! As part of our continuing storm relief efforts, we have invested in the longer-term recovery of 40 craft artists from our community, chosen by an esteemed panel, as they rebuild their artistic practices in Western North Carolina post-Helene. Together, the 33 artists in the WNC Craft Futures Cohort and the seven Virginia A. Groot Craft Futures Residents have each received a grant of $15,000 and are participating in six months of peer-to-peer learning and programs focused on forming a more resilient craft community. Their work will be featured in “WNC Craft Futures: From Here,” a group exhibition on view in the Center for Craft’s Bresler Family Gallery from April 11 to August 30.

Please join us in celebrating the WNC Craft Futures Cohort and Virginia A. Groot Craft Futures Residents at the Community Reception and Open Studios on Thursday, June 12.

Many thanks to our incredible funders and partners, who have made our relief and recovery efforts possible, including many first-time individual donors nationwide.
The WNC Craft Futures Cohort is supported by the Windgate Foundation, Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, Virginia A. Groot Foundation, Maxwell | Hanrahan Foundation, the WHH Foundation, CERF+, the Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts, Township10, Studio Touya, Terrace Clay Studios, and the WNC Hurricane Relief Potters Market. The Center for Craft is supported, in part, by the N.C. Arts Council, a Department of Natural & Cultural Resources division, www.NCArts.org, and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

Hurricane Helene destroyed my studio at Marshall High Studios on the island in Marshall, NC. Please help me get back on feet & rebuild my life and business.

Process is an important aspect to creating art and often concept and form emerge from the act of making. There are many different approaches to producing artwork and it is my mission to highlight the talented carvers of our community. Once hearing about the opportunity to curate a show at Asheville Area Arts Council I knew this was my chance to shine a light on the process of reduction. Whether working in clay, wood, glass or other medium, it takes patience and understanding of the material to manipulate and find its form. As a ceramicist, porcelain is a material that resonates with me and have found a great passion exploring this technique.
I am curating an exhibition titled “Carve: Process of Reduction” The exhibition’s intention is to reveal the artists of our community working in a variety of different materials and using diverse approaches to carving. The exhibition will consist of seven different artists working with clay, wood, glass, printmaking techniques and paper. Each artist has a unique voice that speaks to the process of reduction. With both sculptural and functional objects, the exhibition will feature artworks that demonstrate how these fine artists are crafting and pushing the limits of a material that speaks to them.
Whether carving hard or malleable materials, it requires diligence and dedication. The artists I have chosen are passionate individuals committed to their craft and have spent years developing their skills and collecting specific tools to create a piece of art that reflects their point of view.

Curated by Nina Kawar.
